My Approach

It’s difficult to describe a therapeutic approach without it sounding overly technical so let’s try and keep it simple!

I’m a Humanistic Pluralistic Psychotherapist

What this means is that I am able to integrate a variety of different approaches learned over many years to give you a personalised therapy experience.

In Humanistic approaches the therapist isn’t the ‘expert‘ (you are by the way..) so I won’t be presiding over sessions like some emotionally distant blank-screen authority figure scribbling notes and staring out the window. The website Verywellmind describes Humanistic psychology as:

“… a perspective that emphasizes looking at the whole individual and stresses concepts such as free will, self-efficacy, and self-actualization. Rather than concentrating on dysfunction, humanistic psychology strives to help people fulfill their potential and maximize their well-being.

My aim is that we share a powerful, vulnerable and meaningful experience so that you can leave your gameface at the door and really look within. Your solutions will be revealed to you if you’re honest in your search, but whether or not you choose to heed your own advice is entirely down to you.

I am not a tilt-head-nod-and-frown therapist. I will not soft soap you. I will not run from your elephants in the room. Ultimately I’m a truth seeker who believes in the power of inner transformation.

Back to the Future…

Bit by bit we will deconstruct and make sense of it all – the past, the present and the future. We will make links never considered before allowing for greater clarity and perspective.

We will also reflect on the things helping you in life and the elements that maybe aren’t so constructive e.g. self-limiting beliefs, unhealthy patterns, defence mechanisms, lack of boundaries or unhelpful coping strategies.

Whilst you may have received a mental health diagnosis in a clinical setting our work together will not pathologise you – to me you are a person experiencing unresolved emotional pain not a medical label or cluster of symptoms. I am deeply inspired by the work of Bessel Van der Kolk and Pete Walker who have decades of experience specialising in trauma recovery. Pete sums up my philosophical approach nicely in the following quote, and if you’re keen to go deeper, I make an excellent rabbit-hole companion.
